    Non verbal communication in chat
Jillian Afton · 10/06/00 at 2:25 PM ET

Hi , im a undergraduate at Loughborough ,Uk university. I'm planning on doing my dissertation on the usage of symbols instead of verbal cues and body language in chat on the net.
I am asking for any help you can give me at all as to what angle is recommened to take this from . what im really interested in is the misunderstandings that can occur when someone doesn't type in a smiley face when joking around or a sad face when they are comeing across as being sad?
I'm very interested in the vast amount of freedom the internet can give someone with disabilities for instance , and all the barriers that are no longer there because of the lack of face to face contact!
my predicament is my hypothesis, if anyone has any ideas they would be greatly appreciated! Also im at aloss how to tackle the data? What method should i use should i take it from a discursive angle or from a factor analysis angle? as in counting the amount of times one single person uses emotes and the response they obtain? and if i do theres the question of ethics? thank you for your help!
