Hi Brian,
I am a psych nurse and I'm barely familiar with dr Erickson work (which I am starting to discover with delight however)but I'm very familiar with transe induction. I mean in the world of Brazilian Candomble and the transe: It seems, to the contrary, that it is a mean to reshape a chaotic reality which often does not make any sense to the devotee who comes to the candomble priest to restablish forces or an equilibrium which has been lost. it is manifested either through sickness (mental or physical)or death of relatives, financial problems what have you.. the trance allows the devotee to reconnect with its inner axis or equilibrium and comes out refreshed and renewed. The transe is not enough to reestablish the inner equilibrium that one has adquired at birth or before, but it becomes off topic.
hope this males sense to you.
Ginny
