That is a very good question, I hope that I can explain it with justice. For me, If someone comes in and they are having spiritual problems and they are of a different belief background that I am unfamiliar with, I would never try to assume that I could help them. I will show them, as I do everyone else, that I do care for them and I am more than happy to work on things other than the religious issues. If that is the only reason they seek counseling, I will refer them to someone that can help in that specific area. Now with anyone else, all I want to do is show to hurting people that I am a genuine person who cares about their mental health. To me, that is just showing the love of God to those who are hurting. I do not claim to be a "christian counselor" who only uses the bible for reference. I am a counselor who is a christian that uses many techniques from many wonderful theorist but with a christian world view. I do not bring up religious topics with clients, I only discuss spiritual aspects if and when the client brings it up. Believe me I am not for pounding religious beliefs on anyone, I just think that by allowing God to help me in my sessions that I am better able to help those who are hurting. I guess to maybe put a face on what I am talking about, if this helps any, think about Person-Centered therapy, therapist show genuineness, unconditional positive regard, and empathic understanding in the counseling process. To me, that is sort of what I am trying to do as well, show each of my clients that no matter what it is they are going through that I am there to help and I understand they are hurting. I am congruent with my actions and feeling towards them and that I truly empathize. When I think about God, I think he is the same way, all he wants is for his children to be healthy and happy.

I hope that shed a little light on the subject. I do appreciate your interest in this because I know a lot of people enjoy bashing the whole thought of God in psychology. Don't get me wrong, I understand where they are coming from I guess I just pray that people will start understanding where I am coming from as well.
