By whose standards are body piercings a form of mutilation? I thought mutilation implied altering the body to the point of dysfunction. Especially today, when piercing is a fairly common trend. the piercing that goes on is for the most part not a health concern. That said, do any of you in this thread at least agree that sexual phobias, cutting, and flashbacks at least strongly indicate the possibility of past sexual abuse? I think sexual abuse is more common than alot of people believe. In fact, Bass and Davis' new edition of Courage to Heal includes an extra chapter about the whole false memory movement, and how that has discredited alot of people who claim sexual abuse that actually were abused. I would just caution professionals to avoid discrediting a client who claims abuse, as much as to avoid implanting or suggesting memories. If a client says they were abused, to that client, it is real. as for the first post, given the client's behavior, I would think that some sort of trauma occurred. How is it that this person witnessed her parents' having sex so many times? Lots of kids have caught their parents in the act once, maybe twice, but what's up with parents who routinely "do" it with the door wide open, knowing that their children might get up in the middle of the night? Just because her parents are still married and supportive, and she interacts well with them, doesn't mean they couldn't possibly have done something. I'm not suggesting planting ideas in anyone's head or looking for trouble where there is none. Maybe they didn't do anything wierd. Something happened, somewhere.
