Jay, your and Marty's critique of Oprah and Dr. Phil are ridiculous and absurd. What we are seeing today in the year 2002 from people who hold PhD's in psychology and social work is hilarious and borders on theatre of the absurd. This kind of crap that fool shrinks in the 2000's ram down the publics throat makes for a good chuckle. The idea that television show entertainers spread hate and that there is some kind of a "conspiracy" on the part of corporations or governments to spread anti-humanity propaganda makes for a good laugh. To suggest that this entertainment in the likes of Dr. Phil creates sexual ignorance and prejudice and is some kind of a conspiracy or is a reflection of real people with real jobs who pay taxes, obey the law, are good to their neighbors and raise good families further demonstrates how ignorant and cynical many so called "real" psychotherapists really are in regard to their view of humanity, and further demonstrates shrinks are unwilling to admit that just maybe, the masses are perfectly capable of living good lives and taking care of themselves without the assistance of shrinks who would have humanity believe that humanity is sick and in need of expensive psychotherapy at 150 bucks per 50 minutes. The constant shrink bashing that you refer to that results from these shows clearly tells me that the state of the psychotherapy industry is in grave danger, because colleges and universities with psychochology programs are turning out a bunch of dilettante idiots who can't tell the difference between entertainment and real life, and don't know what the hell they are talking about and are living in fantasy land. Advice to shrinks reading this: get yourself out of a TV land mentality and grow up. And get a sense of humor. If shrinks can't tell the difference between a quack Like Dr. Phil and a Quack like a practicing licensed shrink with a real case load such as many of the shrinks who visit this forum, your profession indeed is in for some very hard times. Merry Christmas. Oh, and lay off the TV shows!
As recently as the 70's or even the 80's it would have been difficult to imagine psychotherapists or social workers practicing as therapists would actually believe that the people on television talk shows, Oprah or Dr. Phil, or Jerry Springer, Montel, etc. etc. etc, etc., as being anything other then entertainers, and audacious enough to purport that the masses are too stupid to know the difference between Oprah and the majority of the shrinks who practice privately. To even compare television entertainers or hold them to the same standard as so called professionals is laughable and clearly demonstrates that shrinks who have nothing better to do but to worry about such silly things, write huge dissertations about such nonsense and who take television entertainers as seriously as a real quack shrink and compares them to game shows such as the gong show or the dating game or family feud, that the so called "real shrinks" are just as stupid as the talk show hosts they berate, and that the profession is really in trouble. There are sit com's about Mathematicians and engineers, MD's. soldiers, etc; other professionals do not feel that their work is any less valid because people poke fun of it on TV. Why should shrinks have special status? If shrinks are so sensitive about being poked fun at, maybe there is some truth to the kind of crap that we see out of Dr. Phil, and shrinks in real life are also controlling and manipulative, and can't laugh at themselves and are also narcissist and believe that everyone else is incapable of making up their own minds.
