I'd hesitate in drawing any conclusions about the psyche of all people who do webcams. It's tempting to assume that there is an exhibitionistic quality at work. Jenni (of JenniCam) has talked about how she feels she's offering a kind of (one-way) companionship with the people who watch her. Networks of people using webcams use it as a kind of visual diary or journal. They display their lives, hoping to get feedback from others that will be helpful... and in turn offer feedback to others. There's a section in the archives of this forum in which we talked about webcams.
