things I'm interested in: WHY meet online ...?
    Laura · 03/12/03 at 4:12 PM ET

I'm working on a research with the key question:
What is the most important thing that social contacts in virtual communities can add to the contacts you allready have in real life?

Everyone can meet real people on every corner of the street, in pubs, in public places, at school, etcetera. Why do we need the internet to get in touch with people? Is it something we want BESIDES the 'normal' contacts, of maybe INSTEAD of it?

I'm interested in the differences between both ways of meeting people (virtual vs real life)but most of all I'd like to find out what virtual communities can offer to you what real life obviously can't..

Is it easier to meet people online? Because we can make ourselves look better and more interesting? Is it because we get lazy and don't want to get out into the rain to meet new people(like here in Holland)? Don't we need physical contacts that much anymore, like hugs and so on? For me online contacts seem to miss the intimicay, but most of all I'd be wondering all the time if the person I'm meeting online is honest and 'real' or simply a big fantast... My question to you all: how do you know if the other person is the one he/she says to be or is it just that you don't care at all??
For me, NOT used to chatting and stuff, it would be nice to understand other people 'in love' with online contacting!

I also wanted to read the online book: John Suler, psychology of cyberspace! But there seems to be an error and no way to read it online, is that right?

Thank's and talk to you later? Laura
