    You've raised a complex issue, one which is
    extremely difficult to analyze and interpret
    on an objective level, because each situation
    and each community has its own unique internal
    dynamics.

    I think what's important to look at is that
    human beings are extremely adaptive to different
    environments, and while
    this is a plus for our species it also
    presents problems when the environment people
    are adapting to is unhealthy. Once people
    become emotionally and psychologically dependent
    on a group they will do almost anything to
    stay connected. Lying and misrepresenting oneself
    in conformity to the collective easily become
    the norm, no matter how damaging to oneself
    and others. This is why this field of study
    is so important. We must learn to understand
    the complexities of human reactions to this
    electronic medium in order to create healthy online environments.
