    Psychological profiling of internet users
    Andrew Kinnear · 12/12/00 at 7:26 ET

    Hi.

Ok, I'm no Psychologist, I am a web developer, and I am working on a project which requires that certain content gets changed on a web site based on the users likes/dislikes, basically his profile.

The trick is that the profiling information is gathered based on the users movements around the site. I thought the most logical way to do this is to divide the users profile into a set of categories based on an analysis of the pages he visited within the site. The traditional way to do this is to attach the idea of the web page to the user and assume that that idea holds the users interest, when what we really want to do is attach a 'pattern of thinking' to the user based on an analysis on what it tells us about the user that he would want to read the web-page at hand. The computer would then be able to determine based on the users profile and the profile of the web pages within the site which content he may be interested in.

I'm not sure how viable this is or how effectively it would work, or even if it is possible to psycho-analyze a web page :-)

Where can I find psychological categories into which web users and web pages can belong?
And how viable do you think this kind of ‘Analysis’ could be?

    Any comments would be welcome.
    Thanks.
    Andrew
