Personally I think that rating/categorizing the content viewed is more relevant in this case to the movement specifics of a user, however using both together could improve the effectiveness of the system. The interviewing of users of the system would be the best way of gathering psychological data but is not necessarily viable in this case because of budget and time constraints. I think a more ‘automatic’ method of gathering psychological data on users is necessary whereby the system watches and learn the patterns and behaviors of its users. I recall a system developed by an MIT graduate which asked you to think of an object, it would then ask you 20 questions about that object (much like the ’20 questions’ game), and from what it could figure out it guessed the object you were thinking of. 9 times out of 10 it was correct, 10 out of 10 times it was close. The system used a very basic form of AI, which learnt from the answers you gave it, every time you completed 20 questions it would know a little more about what you were thinking about and it would use that information later to assist in its ‘guess’. This kind of methodology could be applied to a web user targeting system, in that every time a user visits a page a little more is learnt about that user. In the 20 questions example, the user could be compared to the object in your mind. Eventually, the system knows exactly what is wanted. The hard part is defining what is learnt, what questions are asked and how the user answers them by what he does. I believe a psychoanalytical approach is necessary in defining the questions and the answers. Traditional targeting methods used very strict logical rules, which do not always work effectively because while the Internet is a strictly logical construct, the users that designed it and use it are human and. I realize that much of the information gathered from a full psychoanalysis of a user could not be gathered automatically in this way, what I am trying to do is define what aspects of psychology could be gathered in this way and if the same aspects could be applied in a targeting manner. Psychology is the science that deals with mental processes and behavior, I believe it is much like the Internet in that it is a place where things that are strictly human meet things that are logically explainable.
