Dear RF, After reading your concerns regarding funct. analy. and ABA, I thought maybe I could help conceptualize the semantics. Functional Analysis is an assessment component of ABA. ABA encompasses treatment planning for motivation, skill aquisition and maladaptive behavior reduction. Functional analysis is typically an assessment tool for maladaptive behaviors. Iwata, et. al. published articles in JABA regarding the systematic manipulation of antecedents and consequences to measure outcomes. For example, an Demand condition would include a situation where the trainer would introduce demands on the subject. If the s's behavior increased, the function of that behavior would indicate an escape function. Thus, tx would focus on not allowing escape to be delivered when this behaivor occurs, and then, teaching the subject to escape more appropriately (asking to take a break, maybe). Hope this helps.
