Tantalus, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is not the be-all and end-all. It's a recipe for symptom relief, and that's great. But for people who want some change in their basic ingredients (read personality structure), it may not be effective. You know, I'm sure, that the research says behavioral, psychodynamic, and humanistic therapies can all work if the therapist is proficient and the client's motivated. You have my wholehearted agreement, however, that Barry should find what works for him and not accept the Freudian rut because he's emotionally and financially invested. (Didn't social psych do studies on that phenomenon?)
Good luck, Barry ---
