Just a few brief points:
* while sadism and masochism can be used as characterological descriptions in the same way that some psychologists use borderline, neurotic, bipolar, etc., this should not be confused with people who enjoy S/M, B/D, or erotic powerplay activities. these are ALWAYS consensual, and are engaged in because people enjoy them. they always involve both implicit and explicit rules that help make these activities safe. they are about trust, power, and communication, not about pain per se.
* there is NO data whatsoever suggesting that people who enjoy these activities are any more likely to have been traumatized or exploited than the rest of the population.
* since these activites are consensual, while pedophilia cannot, by definition, be consensual, discussing the two in the same conversation is generally not helpful, and typically obfuscates matters.
