Counselor client relationships:

Not always sexual, but what are the boundries? How close is to close? Should a counselor always be a step higher than his client or should the counselor see his client as equal? I am having a problem with this. Would someone be so kind to fill me in or direct me to some books or journal articles? Thank You Kindly and have a happy 24!!
