Gavin, very interesting and timely question. I am in the second day of my Organizational Behaviour class in the United States. As a matter of fact, it was the text for the course that got me to this discussion group. To the point, though, in response to an assignment, I did a library search on the globalization topic and I stumbled across the following article from the November, 1998 issue of The Academy of Management Executive by Rosabeth Moss Kanter and Thomas D. Dretler entitled "Global strategy and its impact on local operations: lessons from Gilette Singapore". One key quote from the conclusion is, "This local coordination, in turn, left room for incorporating local differences and variations into global thinking - including variations in consumer preferences, infrastructure, and employee expectations." The point, I believe, is to not view the expansion as a cookie cutter application of your Australian situation but to reverse your view and see what you can gain by the diversity you will be adding to the organization and how you will integrate that diversity into the overall, new, organization.
