    One root of Brief Therapy is hypnosis, which demonstrated that treatment could be accomplished in a short period of time. Subsequently, the concept of "hypnotherapy without trance" developed. Techniques from hypnosis were used without the necessity of formal trance. I suggest that you look into the work of Haley(Uncommon Therapy) and Lankton and Lankton (The Answer Within).
