Erickson's approach is no magic bullet. It has to do with focusing therapy on a creative adjustment to the current and future developmental tasks. It accomplishes, for the most part, by helping clients find the experiences they need (utilizing their ‘language’ and behavior). This approach is a large contrast to many approaches to therapy, esp. the so called ‘traditional approach’ that relies upon digging up the past, reliving it, and having ‘corrective emotional experiences’ of catharsis or abreaction followed by ‘insight’. I hope that clarifies it for you.
