Basic functions that make an Avatar

I was thinking about the little green guys in yur MSN messenger list. I usually refer to those as status icons instead of avatars. This made me wonder what the basic functions are that make something an avatar.

The owner should be able to change its avatar at any time?
The owner should be able to communicate an aspect of its personality with the avatar?
The owner should be able to seperate his avatar from others?

I find it quite hard to find a good definition, any thoughts?
