If one wished to manifest oneself as a rock or as a purple dot... if one wished to express the rockness or purple-dot-ness of one's identity.... if one wished to communicate rockeness or purple-dot-ness, then those avatars would do the job. I'm not trying to be funny here... well, maybe partly funny... but I think the answer to your question lies in what one wishes to manifest, communicate, express about oneself. I'm not sure there is an absolute answer to that question. If you're going to create an online avatar environment, then I guess it would be a good idea to give people as many options as possible. The basic features of an avatar might be: - flexiblity in visual form (though, conceivably, that may not be always necessary for an avatar... text alone might fit the bill for some people) - flexibility in movement within the environment - flexibility in manipulating the visual environment, creating the visual environment - flexibility in manipulating and creating sound - flexiblity in verbal communication (typed & oral; public & private) - ideally (though we have a ways to go, techologically speaking), flexibility in creating olfactory, kinesthetic, and gustatory sensations The more sensory flexibility and sensory options there are for the creation of the avatar, the more powerful the ability to manifest what one wishes to manifest.
