I think you're right about that subconscious image formation. It's often a good idea for a person to examine how they mentally are perceiving the online other. I find it helpful to ask people, "What picture do you see in your mind about this person? What do you imagine they are like, even any little detail about their size, hair or eye color, clothes, voice?"..... The results often are very interesting.
