Wow. Certainly we'd be jumping to conclusions to think that the group experience directly led to the psychiatrist's suicide! On the other hand, doing clinical work in cyberspace can be very challenging and at times stressful. The lack of f2f cues can make it difficult for the therapist to understand exactly what's happening with the client. Groups in cyberspace can get extremely complex. And sometimes the "pshrink" can be overwhelmed by the number of people and amount of messages that arrive at his/her computer. On the other hand, there are some advantages to doing clinical work in cyberspace. Asynchronous communication gives the therapist time to think about things, and the lack of f2f cues sometimes makes it easier to deal with strong emotional reactions. There also are lots of resources online (information, support groups) that the therapist can use to supplement the therapy.
