I think you're right, JG. Some of the addictive qualities of the internet involve the fact that it's interactive, as well as the fact the somewhat anonymous and ambiguous social environment activates all sorts of needs and fantasies, conscious and unconscious. But there also is that hypnotic sensory quality of sitting there in your chair, motionless, staring at a bright screen, with the gentle whirring of the computer's fan and the tapping of one's fingers. It certainly can be trance-inducing.
