Very good issues, Martha! Some therapists who use email as an adjunct to f2f therapy make a point of setting clear guidelines about the use of email for supplementary contact. It is very possible that someone might discuss something in email that they can't discuss f2f. On the one hand, we could think of that as resistance. On the other hand, the person HAS opened up to a new issues. I like to think of email and f2f contact as two channels of communication. The trick for the therapist is helping the client to utilize both channels effectively, and to INTEGRATE the two. Perhaps there are some clinicians here in this forum who would like to speak to these issues.
