PSYCHOLOGY OF CYBERSPACE FORUM ARCHIVE
Re: Online conferences and social isolation
Hi Lisa.... I'm not aware of any research or articles about this particular topic, altho I'm sure they must be out there somewhere. I've participated in a number of online conferences and organized a few myself. I'm not entirely sure that everyone at such conferences feel isolated. People who are skilled at online communication (text-based, asynchronous) often enjoy them.... I know I have, and even made some friends at such conferences. Using text-driven chat, auditory and video techniques certainly can enrich an online conference, but it usually takes away the asynchronous dimension, which many people find very convenient. I guess the ultimate conference would combine all of these techniques.
