My guess is that a great deal of networking can (and probably does) occur at online conferences when people are given easy access to each others email addresses. "Backchannel" email is a great way to talk privately with someone you "see" at the conference - altho it's almost impossible to determine exactly how much of that backchannel networking is occurring. It's essentially invisible. Encouraging that kind of private communication probably in turn enriches the conference itself, since people feel like they have "buddies" and may be more willing to participate in the discussions.
