Dear Dr. Broitman: Thank you for your kind response (which I just discovered) to my message some time ago about our book "Power and Control: Escape from Violence." My wife (professor of psychology-child) and I have been conducting studies in mastery and control since my first publication in 1962, using 8-12 year-old children. Our interest is in developing a reliable and valid test for measuring control problems by taking into account 'situational specificity,' thereby lending construct validity to measurement instruments. Our technique applies to all treatment theories and we have applied it to many diagnostic problems with success. What I have read of your Control Mastery Theory, I believe you could do some pre-post testing detailing changes in treat-ment. The Tiffany Control Scales (TCS) is on a CD and usually sells for around $500.00, however, I will be happy to give you a copy (90-page manual on CD) so you can test your theory. What is most useful about the TCS is the fact that you can customize new situations and activities to fit you treatment program. Norms are immediately available for the Customized TCS from the "self-in-general" situation on the Standard TCS. Later you can add you own norms, if you care to. We have numerous papers on the TCS and a couple books (one is mentioned above). If you need further information, please let me know. Sincerely, D. W. Tiffany
