It's always easy to say that aversive therapy has it's problems. Yet as a therapist I don't have to be there too often when a client is acting out. On the other hand, I have seen aversive therapy work to eliminate one given behavior. So for example a self-injurious behavior is no longer present, yet serious aggression starts up. Consider 3 things, what behavior/s would you like to see? Can an aversive therapy be used coupled with positive methods? What is the communication function of the behavior? And with that, can teaching alternative method/s of communication be a useful part of the overall programming package?
