Well Troy, obviously you just have a small little chemical imbalance in your brain son - probably inherited in an unbroken chain of events that started with Adam! This is your online "country GP" from Australia calling. You call us "family physicians" over there. As Robert Feinstein pointed out in the introduction to this Forum, Herr Dr Engel (psychiatrist) and Herr Dr Balint (psychoanalyst) are a good start. Both are founding fathers of academic general practice. Engel is credited with applying Systems Theory (an engineering approach) to Medicine and psychiatry. Balint referred to his book about the doctor-patient relationship as "the pharmacopeia of the drug 'Doctor'". As with any other drug - one needs to know the indications, dosages, side effects etc; etc; The key is to avoid falling into "dualism". I find the following is a good place for me to start with patients. It goes something like this ..... "Which comes first - the chicken or the egg?" This is simply a lousy question. It is the sort beloved by philosophers and intellectuals, who spend their time elaborating problems in theory that do not exist in practice. Karl Marx destroyed them all. There are many levels at which we have problems and it is important to deal with each of them - from the cosmic to the sub-atomic ..... and the individual in between. Always and everywhere this is an individual IN society and IN nature. We can do bugger all about the cosmos and we can do far too much about the molecules! Creating safe relationships is a good middle ground. So, "What are we going to do with the chicken and the egg?" Your call! Luv, Dar.
