"Now that’s scary (that is, it would be scary if psychotherapy was a true science), because if you don’t worry about diagnosis as much as treating, you mis diagnose a client, your treatment will be entirely wrong." That's not true. I never said I wasn't worried about diagnoses, I said I was MORE worried about inappropriate treatment. (What is it with people twisting my words on this board anyway?) As was pointed out earlier, how much difference does it make if the diagnosis is Dysthymic Disorder when the actual disorder is MDD? Treatment is based on many factors, diagnosis being only one. A good treatment plan takes a lot of individualized issues and concerns into account. Gross mistakes (Simple Phobia vs. Schizophrenia) would certainly rise to the level of unethical behavior, IMHO, because the clinician is not practicing with minimal competence. Frankly it sounds like you have an axe to grind. May I ask how you work in the field with such negative views of psychotherapy? It seems that would negatively effect your ability to connect with clients, but maybe I'm wrong on that.
