The Glass Half Full - Dear Doug - Perhaps we can agree that our theories may mostly serve for entertainment and the experience of communication. Nonetheless, just about all children learn to walk, eventually. Maturation does take place. And our patients, who may be stuck in various ways, often enough progress with their lives (at least in parallel with other things that may foster the process) to keep us in a viable profession. Before we existed, and in many societies yet today, the clergy (or their equivalent) gave people some combination of psychological structure and opportunity to talk about themselves, with a frequent enough result that those people felt better and lived their lives more satisfyingly; that is, a frequent enough result for such professionals in those societies to maintain a respected place. Yes, I am optimistic that in forums like this one we can hope to learn more about what we are doing and what is helpful. I do not know what the baseline is that you refer to when you say that we have not increased our understanding. You do read me right that I believe we do severally touch real, if different, parts of the elephant. But I am happy to settle for the fun of collegiality. Johanna
