    Arranged Marriages
Marty Klein · 4/3/99 at 1:52 PM ET

Does anyone have much experience working with arranged marriages? I am seeing an increasing number of them, primarily among engineers from India, Pakistan, China, and Hong Kong. In their own cultural context arranged marriages have strengths and weaknesses, but transplanted into post-modern America they face inevitable difficulties: conflicts over gender roles, definitions of self, sexual expectations, interactions with family of origin, etc.. I usually see these couples via a sexual presenting problem, although sometimes it's for marital counseling. Other than the generic "be sensitive to cultural issues," does anyone have suggestions for making Western therapy helpful for such couples?
