SEXUAL ISSUES IN CLINICAL PRACTICE FORUM ARCHIVE
Re: child abuse?
Sean asks a good question. could give you a better sense of what is going on with her. Also, is there any family history of mental illness, such as schizophrenia? To that, I would add, work with her strengths. I know, it is hard at this point to find real strengths, but start small. She has admitted she wants to feel better. Perhaps you could prescribe some writing exercises around that, since you have found that writing is a way in to her mind. And since she has expressed the desire to be "normal," you might get HER to suggest something small to start with. Have you tried relaxation exercises? Teach her that it is possible for her to relax, and to feel comfortable in her body. If she can benefit from that, it would be a small but concrete measure of comfort for her, and a way for her to realize that she CAN be comforted. You are in a tough situation with a solo private practice. I have raised the question of there being an organization for private practitioners, in order to provide eachother with support in terms of consultation and coverage for vacations and such. To my knowledge (and surprise), there is no such organization anywhere. BOL is an excellent forum for this. As a student intern, I have learned so much about how the practice REALLY works, and have a grand time testing out ideas. I hope some of my suggestions are of help. Keep posting; this is what this forum is for.
