Excellent question! Without any context to work within, I'd say my short answer would be: acute hospitalization (less than 2 weeks) "no". Long term hospitalization (state mental hospital, etc.) "maybe". My first question would be, can this particular client give consent? Is she competent? How old is she? Is this her husband/significant other? Should that matter? I would imagine that, in an institutional setting, a uniform policy would need to be in place. That would be difficult, given the large number of variables. I would also imagine that, aside from the therpeutic concerns, there would be many practical problems to work out. Where would these conjugal visits take place? How long? How often? Would they be "earned"? I would think any institution allowing these kinds of visits could be assuming a great deal of liability. What about birth control? STD's? Could a client exposed in a conjugal visit sue the hospital? Does that even matter? I have more questions than answers. I think a lot of issues would have to be addressed, but I wouldn't say "no" automatically. It's an interesting dilemma. Does anyone know of a psychiatric facility that allows conjugal visits?
