    Re: masturbation

Is this hymen myth still active? I thought that went the way of the missionary position. this way of thinking reflects stereotyped gender roles.

Fact: the hymen can be "broken" in a number of ways. For some, the hymen was never intact-already had an opening. For others, strenuous physical activity can cause tears in an "intact" hymen. I'm not even sure a sexual partner can tell if the hymen is broken. There is no medical way to determine if someone is a virgin. It would take more than a broken hymen for charges to be brought against a family (I presume they fear charges of sexual abuse?)
Evidence of sexual abuse of a child would include injury to the genital area, as in tears from adult-sized penetration, or bruises from force. The child is not likely to use such force on herself during masturbation.
