Great article. There's nothing I could really add. My scholarship happens to be in the area of feminism. Taboos are definitely used as a means of control. Ignorance allows it to occur. It's a vicious cycle. It's hard to defeat ignorance when truth and knowledge are censored or distorted. Sort of on this subject. I read an article by Gloria Steinem a few years ago. She noted that the oppontents of woman's rights at once accuse feminists of being dangerously sexual(heterosexual) while at the same time characterize them as man-hating lesbians, a contradiction that couldn't possibly be true. Clearly, it's all in an effort to confuse and create fear in order to maintain social control.
