I agree whole heartedly with you Leonard. The medical model is inappropriate to the therapeutic experience. Diagnosing people and then applying some form of treatment applies if one has a skin rash, broken arm, cancer or other kind of physical problem. People with relational, interpersonal, emotional issues need to become involved in a dialogue in which they select what is beneficial to their situation. They cannot profit from presenting themselves for a diagnoses and then cooperating with whatever treatment is administered by whomever is oriented to whatever philosophy from where ever he/she happened to be indoctrinated. Individuals struggling with various issues obtain therapeutic experiences because of what they do not because of what is done to them. the "therapist's" role is to facilitate that process. It requires much sensitivity, skill and training not to impose ones view of reality on to another but to help that person develop their own meaningful reality. I believe this interactional/learning/changing process also applies to conditions in which medication can be useful but it must be part of an interpersonal process. some of this process can happen online too and the results can be therapeutic for the individual w/o the need for the helper getting involved with calling what he/she does "therapy".
In struggle,
