THe other thing wrong with this picture was that the "client" in question was apparently already seeing a therapist. I also have interacted in these forums with clients of another therapist, and I am always careful not to start giving advice that could be construed as therapy, as it may conflict with that client's pre-existing therapist. You don't know the whole picture of that person, and if you start "treating' this person, you risk undermining work that is already being done, that may include issues of trust, resistance, or cognitive distortions. In other words, what the client tells you may not be the real picture. If I give any advice, it is of the nature of, "Have you told your therapist about this?" or I might reflect on the emotional content of what the person is saying, but always encourage them to talk it over in therapy. I have actually made a couple of online friends of people who are seeing therapists, and I am seeing one myself, so while we talk occasionally about therapy, it is of a personal nature, and neither I nor the other person give advice or try to counsel outside the parameters of friendship.
