    Therapeutic Boundaries
    Confused · 03/12/02 at 11:11 ET

How do you know where to draw the line when it comes to boundaries and providing support to a client? Obviously, they aren't going to be a friend or interact socially, but what about the following situations?

Is it OK to allow patients to leave phone messages between sessions?

Is it appropriate for therapists to hug clients the clients ask them to?

Is it ever appropriate for the therapist or client to give one another a small gift or card?

    I'd appreciate your answers.
