I don't know of any answer that pertains to Erickson's actual work in a case of this nature. However, I urge you to obtain more of her unique history before beginning any treatment. You can't easily second-guess a symptom's etiology and meaning from such a surface picture of it. IF she paints no interesting history (which is sometimes the case in OCD type leadened clients( dig deeply into the client's understanding of what will happen if she does not establish this balance of syllables, etc. Once you find out what this does for her, you can begin to help her to that same outcome without the symptom.
Also, you may find aid in contacting Jane Parsons, MSW in NY. She was very close to Kay Thompson, DDS before her death. Kay studied a great deal with Dr. Erickson and was past president of the ADA. Most likely she told Jane several tips about TMJ work. Jane is at: janepars@aol.com.
