Thanks for the correction / clarification. Although I was aware of Erickson letting the client take the credit, etc., I see now that my writing doesn't reflect that, and points to a mistaken blending of my understandings between his trance scripts/demos/teaching situations and his actual work with clients and patients. When I wrote: "I can think of very few trance scripts of Erickson's where at some point he doesn't have the client ratify the trance work done,..." When I wrote: "...and when appropriate, have the change in the thinking or behavior consciously recognized by the client." I was thinking about teaching examples where Erickson would use hand levitation like in Mind-Body Communication in Hypnosis, or with S. in awakening from trance to note her change in state to more calm. This, as you importantly noted, is different from the way that Erickson did his therapeutic work. I want to thank you for the consideration you gave to my reply and the very useful distinction reminder which more directly and correctly addresses Frank's question in his posting. (and which will help me in my continued learning.)
I was thinking more of examples like what Rossi transcribed in Experiencing Hypnosis re: Dr. Q, Double Bind to Ratify Trance:
Erickson: "Do you know if you were in a trance?"
