    Dear Erik

    I cannot comment on what Erickson prioritised as I did not know him.

    However, hypnosis is a useful way of helping a person create and maintain a state in which they can apply their attention to ideas which may prove helpful. I don't think you need to create a depressive trance state to do that. The state of hypnotic trance is more useful than the depressive one as it is less biased.

    However, I'm sure your teachers have their reasons for what they teach and of course, this is only my opinion.
