What tool shall we use to find Truth? - Not Hypnosis.
Stephen Lankton · 3/5/99 at 3:24 PM ET

Erickson rightly taught that hypnosis was a tool for change and not for uncovering Truth. Memory is highly malleable, some clients are extremely suggestible, and many relationships are quite prone to pleasing the m.v.p., and much content is determined by demand characteristics. All in all, any "uncovered" incident such as this becomes interesting but not for the validity it can support. Regardless of what a person's tale is, if that person is suffering from post traumatic stress type symptoms, Erickson would help the person overcome those features that created debilitation. The validity would not become the issue. Hypnosis would be used to help create change.
