Each person who has learned to substitute behaviors that increase the enmeshment or dependency of others needs to be helped. The help is to connect them with behavior that truly fulfill the "inappropriately acted upon" needs and do so in both an age appropriate manner as well as a developmentally appropriate manner (even if the later is only symbolic). As each member shifts toward increasingly more fulfillment, the enmeshment behaviors will not be used and certainly not escalated. This is treating the individuals in the context of the family...I believe Erickson would say this is his version of how family therapy works.
