Erickson's approach was centered on the understanding that people need to be able to associate to the experiential resources they need in the context in which they need them. To do that experiene retrieval and association of experience are fundamental. The "tools" for retrieving and associating are usually rather tender, subtle, and delicate. Noone ever screamed in Erickson's hypnosis or in my office using hypnosis to my knowledge. They got better/cured however.
I hope that helps.
