I have a very basic question regarding hypnosis. My understanding is that one of main reasons that people are afraid of hypnosis is that they are worried that a therapist might "insert" a thought into their mind that is inconsistent with their values. Could you explain how a person can be susceptible to a hypnotist's suggestions and yet be able to reject a suggestion that doesn't resonate with their values? I have read several books on hypnosis, but none have provided a deep enough explanation as far as I am concerned. I have enjoyed your metaphors and ability to simplify conplex topics so I was hoping you might be able to help. Thanks for bearing with me on what is probably a very basic question. Unfortunately, I went to a cognitive behavioral program that did not expose me to Erickson's work, but I have a strong interest in the subject.
