You again said: "What I still find absolutely amazing is the fact that club members want to to give the impression that hypnosis started with Milton..." You can think this if you like, but you will find that this is not accurate if your read Zeig's, my, or Rossi's publications. As a Diplomate in Clinical Hypnosis, my exam by the Medical Board (who were basically hostile to Erickson's trainees) insured that I was had a depth of knowledge and was conversant in the history of hypnosis (concerning that done over the years by academic, clinical, and research professionals) sans Erickson. However, this formum is about the work of Dr. Erickson. Some seemed to have overlooked that there is more to his work that his use of hypnosis. In fact, it is his approach to change which is really his greater historical contribution to therapy (According to Psychology Today and Time).
The non-professional organizations, (I was not speaking about you -- I don't know you), certify non-professionals after very short periods of attendance. The general public only sees the 'credential' and knows nothing of the depth of skill/information/training/supervision/ethics/what-have-you that lies behind it. So, when one sends people who lack Master and Doctorate degrees to them, that will be the outcome. I can't count how many "Certified Hypnotherapist" there are doing 'past life regressions' and so on at the local metaphysical book stores around here: The yoga teachers, the Reiki teachers, the clairvoyants, the store owners (a couple with a $30 doctorate in divinity from on online store), the Tarot readers, etc. They 'counsel' people seeking help or change – let’s say you are depressed and never were comfortable crying or asking for varieties of appropriate and needed attention…. Do these non-professionals, and certified hypnosis folk, suggest that you alter how you think about your emotional needs and teach you how to do so, or do they recommend different communication with your partner and family, or ask you to face the ‘fears’ of showing those learned limits and breaking the bonds that you use to prevent crying and getting comfort? No. Do they recommend psychotherapy or medication, even? No. They recommend hypnosis to discover that you were a King in England (or a Russian peasant) who was killed prematurely, or getting ear coning, wearing amethyst crystals, getting in contact with your spirit guides, buying singing bowls or tuning forks for your chakra balancing, and coming back for a Tarot reading about your future.
So, the people with the problems…well, you know…don’t gain relief from those problems.
