Hello, You wrote: He got the idea from a Milton demo... however he created the patterns as he teaches it. The real question is: Why use the handshake? You also wrote: This is a serious discussion forum so it seems irrelevant but since you bring it up: He is overweight, although your comment "grossly" simply states your values and beliefs... I wonder if you would say that Milton was crippled and would comment on the way he speaked... soory it didn't seem nice to me. And finally the magic word "appears"... To whom? I've never met anyone capable of more attention and awareness than Richard Bandler... but then again I might have a short attention span. :-) What were we talking about? Oh yes the handshake induction... he got the idea from a Milton demo... however he created the pattern as he teaches it. Pull your own right hand slightly away from the other person's hand. Milton did it differently and of course very successfully. Richard didn't even saw that demo, he read about it so he had to figure out some way to reproduce the result. Later he found out Milton didn't quite different but it didn't matter he already had created the handshake induction as it is known in NLP. Oh btw, as you have the other person's right wrist with your left hand (use two fingers it is nicer and less agressive) you may press and release (softly) to match and then guide the other person's heart rate or breathing... as you slow down the rate at which you press and release you guide the other person into a trance... There are many variations to this induction. By this I mean the handshake one or my message? I guess I mean the handshake one... Have a great day and sweet dreams...
"In terms of NLP, the only use of the handshake I know of is the handshake interrupt pattern Bandler teaches which he got from Erickson."
Milton did it differently and of course very successfully.
I only use it as demo / convincer on training settings but on therapeutic context I find it unneccesary.
I have the choice of using it or not but I rather have the client feel comfortable with a slower induction... specially if the client comes from outside the training setting... and he wants to go into a trance for the first time.
"Of course Bandler also smokes, is grossly overweight and appears to have the attention span of a three year old so I don't take his teaching as gospel. (lol)"
He smoked... he stoped over 7 years ago. So your comment is very outdated. BTW this is not bad or good, I just state that it is outdated.
I recommend studing about nesting loops. And not simply linear nesting loops... 3D nesting loops.
Take with your left hand the other person's right wrist as you pull it slightly and cross it in front of the other person's eyes. (sort of clearing out the pictures)
Then point with your right hand the other person's right hand and say... look at your hand and notice the changing focus of your eyes... as you take a deep breath and relax... close your eyes... all the way down...
