Yes, it may be hard to design studies to empirically validate approaches such as utilization, but I would hope that those who know more about research than I are sufficiently inventive because we need such studies.

As far as indirect suggestion is concerned, the entire field of social psychology demonstrates responsiveness to nuance. To say that implication is ineffective is wrong. Erickson was the consumate social psychological therapist and (researchable) perspectives from social psych. can be used to better understand some of his methods
