Utilization is one of those intangibles that are not quiet so easy to quantify. Yes, it includes pacing and yes-sets about the client and his environment. (noticing his chair, his breathing, the feeling in his toe, etc.) Yes, it includes Reframing the behavior into a positive context (showing the compulsive arm mover how to sand wood) Yes, it includes using lots of process suggestions (we've done good work here today, your inner mind can review it and learn, your inner mind has ways of finding solutions that can surprise you, etc.) The main idea behind the concept is to be OBSERVANT. Notice all that the client presents, both consciously and unconsciously. (Eg the client says he feels wonderfully relaxed and his toe or foot is tapping fast and furiously.) It's recognizing signs of trance developing in the client and adapting your induction method, speed, and style accordingly. It's being in a trance yourself, and relying on your unconscious mind to search through all of you professional learnings, experiences, and expertise to synthesize a solution and present it to your conscious mind.
