There appears to be a manifestation of the physiological "sleep paralysis" that inhibits voluntary movements and to a lesser degree speech when we are in various stages of sleep. While it may be viewed with psychological constructs such as the conscious and unconscious minds, its true nature needs to be understood so as to formulate realistic expectations for medical limitations. Erickson himself was a great example of how one can manage medical problems, increase productive activities, and enjoy life more fully when presented with such situations. When he was restricted to a wheelchair he used to walk while seated in it.
